Than their was two, the south division championship series start on March 9th in Port Colborne, Ontario at the Vale Centre for game one of the best of seven series in Greater Metro Hockey League action between the Niagara Whalers and St. George Ravens. The Whalers went into the south division championships with taking four of six meetings during the 2016 – 2017 regular season.
Tyler Jackson fires the Whalers first game of the game at 16:47 of the opening period to give Niagara a 1 – 0 lead with Zack Lansfield and Paolo Sivilotti adding the contributors. With five seconds left in the first and on a Whaler power play Jackson sinks his second of the contest to bring the lead to 2 – 0. Sivilotti and Lansfield added the helpers. Registering a hat trick and giving Niagara a 3 – o lead was Whaler Tyler Jackson at the 6:14 mark of the second. Lansfield and Sivilotti drew the assists on Jackson’s third of the game. At 8:01 of the period and on a power play, David Christopher increases the lead for the hosts with Jackson and Sivilotti notching the helpers.
Bringing the lead to 5 – 0, 27 seconds after Christopher’s goal, Jackson sunk his fourth of the game with Jesse Masterson and Christopher setting up Jackson’s goal. With their second power play marker of the game, Tyler Hore and Manny Manns add the helpers on Matt Hore’s goal at 17:27 of the period. With 1:07 left in the game and sinking the Whalers third power play goal was Tyler Hore to give Niagara a 7 – 0 shutout win over the Ravens. Christopher and Jackson had the assists on Hore’s goal. Whaler netminder Joel Horodziejcyk made 28 saves in Niagara’s first win of the south division championships.
In game two of the series, the Whalers will hit the ice in Port Colborne against the Ravens in a 7:00 p.m puck drop.
