In game one of the Greater Metro Hockey League 2017 Russell Cup Championship series, the north division Parry Sound Islanders hosted the south division Niagara Whalers on March 22nd at the Humphrey Community Centre in Seguin, Ontario.
Milan Prusek scores the game opener 7:38 into the first with Ervin Halasz and Jan Vyoral drawing the helpers on the Islanders lone goal of the contest. Tyler Jackson sends a pass to Ralfs Circenis to even the game 1 – 1 for the Whalers 17:01 into the period. Matt Hore sends Niagara into the first intermission with a 2 – 1 lead with 15 seconds left in the first with Blake Luscombe and Tyler Hore setting up Matt Hore’s power play goal. 2:54 into the second, Luscombe draws the contributor on Whaler Travis Valvo’s goal to increase Niagara’s lead to 3 – 1. Scoring the visitors second power play goal of the game was Niagara’s Manny Manns to bring the lead to 4 – 1 at the 6:02 mark of the period with Luscombe and Matt Hore registering the assists.
Adding to the lead Manns, Luscombe and Matt Hore were back at it again for the Whalers on Manns second of the game four seconds past the halfway mark of the middle stanza. Paolo Sivilotti fires the sixth of the game for the Whalers 2:15 into the third with Zack Lansfield and Broderick Kelly adding the contributors. With 1:50 left in the game, Matt Hore fires the final marker of the game to give the Whalers a 7 – 1 win and a 1 – 0 lead in the championship series.
Whaler goaltender Joel Horodziejczyk turned away 19 of 20 shots in Niagara’s game one win in Seguin.
Game two will take place in Port Colborne, Ontario on March 24th in a 7:30 p.m start at the Vale Centre between the Whalers and Islanders.
