The south division Niagara Whalers hit the ice at the Vale Centre in Port Colborne, Ontario for game two of the 2017 Greater Metro Hockey League Russell Cup Championship series against the north division Parry Sound Islanders on March 24th with the Whalers coming off a 7 – 1 win on March 22nd in game one of the best of seven championship series.
With Niagara on a power play 4:41 into the middle stanza, Blake Luscombe fires the opening goal for the Whalers with Matt Hore and Manny Manns drawing the assists. Tyler Jackson gives the hosts a 2 – 0 lead at the 12:16 mark of the period with Zack Lansfield and Paolo Sivilotti adding the contributors. With 16 seconds left the period, Sivolotti scores Niagara’s second power play marker of the period to send the Whalers into the second intermission up 3 – 0. Lansfield and Brandon Cercone had the helpers on Sivilotti’s goal. At 4:11 of the third, Blake Luscombe finds the back of the Islanders net to bring the lead to 4 – 0 with Matt Hore and Callahan Moretti setting up Luscombe’s goal.
Matt Hore and Manny Manns drew the contributors on Luscombe’s second of the contest at 13:37 of the final period to give the Whalers a 5 – 0 shutout win over Parry Sound. Earning the shutout on home ice on Friday evening in Port Colborne, Niagara goaltender Joel Horodziejczyk had the shutout with 20 saves for the Whalers.
Niagara could take a 3 – 0 lead with a win when they face the Islanders on March 25th in Parry Sound in a 7:30 p.m start in game three of the 2017 championship series.
