At the Vale Centre in Port Colborne, Ontario on February 2nd, the third place (28-8-0-1) Niagara Whalers hit the ice against the second place (30 – 6) Kingsville Kings in a south division Greater Metro Hockey League match – up.
2:58 into the opening period, Frolov Mikhail sinks the Whalers first goal of the game to give Niagara a 1 – 0 lead with Kellan Rosenbaum and John Swiatek adding the helpers on Mikhail’s goal. Scoring his second of the game giving the hosts a 2 – 0 lead, Frolov Mikhail finds the back of the Kings net at the 17:44 mark of the period to send Niagara into the first intermission up 2 – 0. Swiatek and Rosenbaum had the assists on Mikhail’s goal. At 5:23 of the second, Whaler Swiatek adds Niagara’s lead with Daniel Pugliese and Rosenbaum notching the contributors on Swiatek’s goal. Petr Panacek fires Kingsville first goal behind Whaler goaltender Will Harvey 6:59 into the middle stanza with Ivan Mikhailov and David Vostarek registering the assists. Nick Pastorious and Swiatek set up Rosenbaum 2:57 into the third to bring Niagara’s lead to 4 – 1.
With the Whalers on a power play 36 seconds before the halfway mark of the final period, Ethan Spaxman increases the lead to 5 – 1. Steven Farano and Pastorious had the helpers on Spaxman’s power play marker. Bringing the lead to 6 – 1 at 13:54 was Niagara’s Farano with Alex Remedios and Mikhail drawing the assists on Farano’s power play goal. With 4:19 remaining in the game, Matyas Mach finds Evlar Olafsson for the Kings second goal of the contest. Whaler goaltender Will Harvey turned away 40 of 42 shots in Niagara’s 6 – 2 win over the Kings.
The Whalers will now hit the road for a February 3rd match – up in a 8:00 p.m start in London against the London Lakers.
