Vescio, Serre, Herbster Named NOJHL Week Fourteen Stars

The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday December 18th that Powassan Voodoos rookie defenceman Payton Vescio along with forwards Caleb Serre of the Blind River Beavers and Kyle Herbster of the Cochrane Crunch have been named its 3 Stars of the Week for the period ending December 17th.

Payton Vescio (D) Powassan Voodoos – As the second youngest, non-affiliate, defenceman in the NOJHL this season, the 16-year-old Vescio has preformed well for league-leading Powassan.

The North Bay product produced five points, including a trio of game-winning assists, as Powassan skated to three consecutive road victories over the weekend.

Vescio began with a pair of helpers in a triumph at Cochrane Friday, before helping set-up the difference maker in Hearst Saturday.

He then capped off his week with two more assists Sunday afternoon as the Voodoos rallied to defeat Timmins.

The rookie defenceman now has points in five straight and has moved up into a tie for seventh in scoring among first-year league blueliners with 17.

Caleb Serre (F) Blind River Beavers – With four points in a pair of Blind River wins last week, the 18-year-old Serre moved into the team scoring lead with 42.

Serre started by notching the game-winner to go with an earlier assist as the Beavers rallied late to upend the surging Soo Thunderbirds Friday night in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

He then added another marker as well as a helper Sunday as Blind River topped French River.

With tallies in three consecutive outings and points in five straight games, Serre has now set personal single-season marks in goals and points with 23 and 42 respectively.

Kyle Herbster (F) Cochrane Crunch – Herbster’s offensive efforts helped Cochrane collect six of a possible eight points during a busy four-game slate last week.

The 19-year-old forward began by picking up an assist in a triumph at Timmins then scored once in a setback vs. Powassan.

From there the Crunch standout added another marker and set-up two more in a double overtime decision at Kirkland Lake.

The Cary, Illinois product then tallied twice more and supplied an one assist in a win vs. Hearst Sunday.

Sporting a five-game point streak, Herbster now sits tied for second in NOJHL scoring with 49 points, in 35 games, having accumulated 21 goals and 28 assists so far, this season.
