The host Penticton Vees of the British Columbia Hockey League took to the ice on Saturday May 6th in the 2017 Western Canada Cup semi – final to face the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Battlefords North Stars with the Vees edging the North Stars on day one in a 2 – 1 shootout.
Taylor Ward sinks the first goal at 15:06 of the opening period to give the hosts a 1 – 0 lead on a Penticton power play with Grant Cruikshank and Nicholas Jones adding the contributors on Ward’s goal. Massimo Rizzo fires Penticton’s second goal of the game 3:23 into the middle stanza with Jones and Gabe Bast drawing the assists on Rizzo’s power play marker. Jared Nash picks up a rebound in front of North Star netminder Joel Gryzbowski to bring the Vees lead to 3 – 0 at 16:43 of the second. Chris Klack and Duncan Campbell notched the helpers on Nash’s goal. 43 seconds past the halfway mark of the third period with an unassisted shorthanded goal, Cruikshank found the back of the Grybowski’s net at the 10:43 mark of the third to give Penticton a 4 – 0 win over the SJHL North Stars.
Battlefords netminder Joel Gryzbowski turned away 34 of 38 shots while Vee goaltender Mathew Robson earned the shutout for Penticton with stopping 23 of 23 shots to help advance the hosts to the 2017 Western Canada Cup final.
The Vees will now wait for the winner between the BCHL Chilliwack Chiefs and AJHL Brooks Bandits to see who Penticton will meet in the final at 4:00 p.m (PST) start for the second opportunity to advance to the 2017 RBC Cup in Cobourg, Ontario.
