10 games converged on Port Colborne, Ontario to take part in the 2015 Greater Metro Hockey League College Showcase Classic to showcase themselves in front of higher levels of the game including the Almaguin Spartans.
At 10:00 a.m on December 15th, the North division Spartans hit the ice for their first game of the day against second place South division Toronto Attack at the Vale Centre. At 46:40 of the first, Austin Maietta opened the scoring to give the Attack a 1 – 0 lead with Chase Harrison and Derek Atwood. Liam Morris sinks Toronto’s second goal at 55:02 with a pass from Trevor Costello. With two seconds left in the first, Ludvig Nilsson scores Almaguin’s first goal of the game with an assist from Erik Erkers.
Nilsson sinks his second of the contest at the two minute mark of the second period with Brodie Whitehead drawing the helper on Nilsson’s goal. With an unassisted goal, Nilsson registers a hat trick for the Spartans at 6:30 of the second with his third of the game and giving Almaguin a 3 – 2 lead. At 15:30 of the second, Toronto’s Alex Boswell evens the game 3 – 3 for the Attack with contributors from Stefan von Engelbrechten and Daniel Gauvreau. Boswell sank the game winner to give the Attack a 4 – 3 win over the Spartans at 48:39 of the second with assists from von Engelbrechten and Patrick Morgan.
Almaguin’s Tanner Emerson and Nicolas Jouanne both saw action between the pipes for the Spartans on Tuesday morning in Port Colborne.
At 12:30 p.m on Tuesday, Almaguin played their second game of the Showcase when they met the first place Central division Alliston Coyotes. At 21:48 of the first, Nilsson finds the back of the Coyotes net to give the Spartans a 1 – 0 lead with helpers from Aron Knutsson and Erkers. Coyote Viacheslav Chegrintcev sinks the tying goal at 56:10 of the first with Cullen Bonnel and Dmitiri Russu registering the contributors. Bonnel scores the go – ahead goal at 6:31 of the second to give Alliston a 2 – 1 lead on a Coyote unassisted goal.
Adam Axelsson sinks the Spartans a tying goal and bringing the game to 2 – 2 with Gustav Wessling and Britton Whitehead adding the helpers. Alliston’s Bonel scores his second of the game at 13:46 of the second to give the Coyotes a 3 – 2 lead with a pass from Dmitri Russu. Wessling fires his second of the contest at 16:40 of the period with Axelsson and Andrew Rodgers adding the helpers. At the twenty two mark of the second on an unassisted goal, Coyote Austin Cunningham gave Alliston a 4 – 3 win over Almaguin.
Andrew Cunningham and Sebastien Demassa Carlson turned away 46 shots in total between the two Spartan goaltenders from the Coyotes.
Almaguin will host the Bracebridge Blues in South River for a 7:30 p.m start on December 18th in GMHL action.
