On October 1st, the Greater Metro Hockey League’s (GMHL) North York Renegades hit the ice looking for their first win of the 2015 – 2016 season when they traveled to Norfolk to face the Vikings at the Talbot Gardens.
2:06 into the first period, Sean Graziano set up Spencer Horner with a pass to sink the first goal of the game for the Renegades to give North York a 1 – 0 lead. Charlie Johnson of the Vikings tied the game 1 – 1 at the 14:36 mark of the first with a goal behind Renegade goaltender Marc Villeneuve. Anthony Antonelli and Chase Smith added the assists on Johnson’s goal. North York’s Jesse Georgopoulos scored the go – ahead goal at 16:41 of the first with a pass from Mark Mannarn. With 2:14 left in the first, Robert Mulligan evens the game at 2 – 2 with goal for Norfolk. Antonelli added the helper on Mulligan’s goal.
Renegade Mark Mannarn finds the back of Viking netminder Mark Moon’s net at 2:52 of the second with assists from Lucas Silva and North York’s goaltender Marc Villeneuve. Giving the Renegades a 4 – 2 lead, Mannarn scores his second goal of the game at 6:31 of the second with contributors from Silva and Georgopoulos. At 8:47 of the second stanza, Norfolk’s Babb Jordan brings the game within one with assists from Brendan Foksa and Ethan Bullivant.
Antonelli and Smith register assists on Norfolk’s tying goal by Foksa at 3:39 of the third. Chase Smith sinks the Vikings fifth goal of the game 10 seconds after Foksa’s tying goal at 3:49 of the period to give the hosts a 5 – 4 lead. Martin Friedrich and Johnson added the contributors on Smith’s goal. Adding to the Viking’s lead Johnson scores his second of the game at the four minute mark of the period to give Norfolk a 6 – 4 lead with assists from Friedrich and Smith. 7:22 into the third, Georgopoulos brings the Renegades within one with Silva and Christopher Thompson adding the helpers.
Justin Pirie scores North York’s sixth goal of the game to tie the high scoring match at 6 – 6 just past the halfway mark of the period with a goal behind Viking netminder Kyle Rarick at 10:13 of the final period. At 15:12 of the third, newly acquired Brandon Neto sinks the Renegades seventh of the game with help from Brandon Newman and Silva. Registering his second goal of the game, Foksa sinks the tying goal to bring the game to 7 – 7 at 17:50 of the third with contributors from Jordan and Johnson. With 90 seconds left in the game, Charlie Johnson scores his third of the game to give the 18 year old Mason City Iowa a hat trick to hand the Renegades their seventh straight loss. Mulligan and Antonelli had the assists on Johnson goal to give the Vikings a 8 – 7 win over North York.
