The British Columbia Hockey League’s Penticton Vees hit the ice to face the hosts, Ontario Junior Hockey League Cobourg Cougars at the 2017 RBC Cup on May 15th in Cobourg, Ontario. The Vees come into Monday evening’s match – up with a 2 – 1 overtime loss to the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Brooks Bandits while the Cougars edged the OJHL Trenton Golden Hawks 3 – 2 in overtime.
On a failed reverse Cougar attempt and only 24 seconds into the game, Penticton’s Taylor Ward was credited with an unassisted goal that was deflected behind the back of Cobourg netminder Stefano Durante to give the Vees a 1 – 0 lead. To the right of the net, Cougar Spencer Roberts jams the puck under Penticton netminder Mathew Robson’s blocker to even the game at 16:57 of the period to send the game into the second intermission tied 1 – 1. At 2:49 of the final period, Chris Klack fires a goal from the Vees blueline to sink the go – ahead for Penticton with an assist from Duncan Campbell to give the BCHL representatives a 2 – 1 lead.
With 3:18 remaining in the game and one second left in Penticton’s Klack’s interference penalty, Cougar Brennan Roy finds the back of Vee netminder Robson’s net to even the game 2 – 2 on a power play with Cobourg redirect. Brenden Locke had the contributor on Roy’s tying goal.
Sinking the game winner on a backhand pass from Penticton’s Nicholas Jones, Taylor Sanheim sinks the overtime goal behind Durante 6:29 into the extra ten minutes to give the Vees a 3 – 2 win. Mitch Meek had the other helper on Jones’ game winner. Penticton defenseman Griffin Mendel and Cougar goaltender Stefano Durante were slected the game stars in the lone game on Monday evening in Cobourg.
The Cougars will now face the Ligue de Hockey Junior AAA du Québec champions, the Terrebonne de Corbas on May 16th at 7:30 p.m (EST) while Penticton will have a day off before returning to action at the RBC Cup on May 17th in an afternoon against the OJHL Trenton Golden Hawks in a 3:30 p.m (EST) start.
