GMHL Whalers Add Defenseman Desjardins to Blueline for 2017/18

The Greater Metro Hockey League’s Niagara Whalers have added defenseman Patrick Desjardins to their blueline for the 2017 – 2018 season. Desjardin comes to Port Colborne after playing the last two seasons in his hometown of Welland, Ontario with the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Welland Canadians.

The 2012 ninth round 167th overall selection of the Ontario Hockey League’s Soo Greyhounds appeared in 53 regular season games with the Canadians from 2015 – 2017 with sinking 20 goals and adding 29 assists while tallying a total of 82 minutes in penalties. In nine post – season match – ups, the 21 year old 6’3″ and 195 lbs blueliner added one goal and contributed on three more along with accumulating 14 minutes in penalties in Welland.

Niagara’s general manager Spencer DeWolfe told the Junior Hockey Network that “Desjardins will bring leadership and a high end defenseman. He has won the Defenceman of the Year in the Golden Horseshoe Conference. Being a captain with the Canadians and running the power play from the back end will only translate into positive results for our team this year. Pat is highly skilled, a good first pass, smooth skater and high IQ. Having a bigger defenceman who shoots right helps significantly. It helps that him and Zach Main are both local players and best friends.”
