GMHL Knights Loss a Tough One in South River to the Spartans

The fourth place (14-5-3) Meaford Knights headed to South River, Ontario on November 26th to meet the Almaguin Spartans in Greater Metro Hockey League north division action. The Knights were just one point behind the second place (16-5) Spartans with 31 points in an Sunday afternoon matinee at the South River-Machar Community Centre.

Almaguin’s Morgan Kjellgren scores the first goal of the contest at 12:54 of the opening period to give the Spartans a 1 – 0 lead. Mathew Labrosse and Bryan Austin had the helpers on Kjellgren’s goal. In a physical affair in the middle stanza, Labrosse sinks the lone goal for the hosts at 16:43 of the period to give Almaguin a 2 – 0 lead with Alexandre Gauthier and Connor Eastaugh drew the contributors on Labrosse’s goal. Kjellgren sends a pass to Ty Hannaford to increase Almaguin’s lead to 3 – 0 at the 6:58 mark of the third. Meaford’s Julien Dalpe finds the back of the Spartans net with 3:13 left in the game. Daniel Leja and Tyler Strutz had the assists on Dalpe’s goal. Knight goaltender Maris Saulgriezis turned away 46 of 49 shots in Meaford’s 3 – 1 loss in South River.

Meaford coach Nathan Parrish told the Junior Hockey Network that “ this afternoon’s game was tough loss to a team that is perfect at home this far, but the coaching staff are proud of the way our guys competed. We looking forward to Thursday when we meet the Bradford Rattlers on home ice. We need to rest a few players with our players banged up, we need to work on our powerplay this week in practice and make sure our compete level stays up.”

Next up for the Knights will be the Bradford Rattlers in Meaford in a GMHL regular season action in a 7:30 p.m start.
