Coming of a 2 – 1 shootout loss in game one at the 2017 Fred Page Cup in Terrebonne, Quebec, the Central Canda Hockey League’s Carleton Place Canadians were back in action on May 4th against the hosts, the Ligue de Hockey Junior AAA du Québec Corbas de Terrebonne who were had beaten the Maritime Hockey League Truro Bearcats 24 hours earlier in junior ‘A’ Eastern Canada Championship action.
Carleton Place’s Tim Theocharidis gave the 2017 CCHL champions a 1 – 0 lead 4:40 into the opening period on a Canadians power play with William Cullen and Andrew Dobson adding the contributors. 51 seconds before the halfway mark of the first, Connor Merkley finds the back of Corbas netminder Jeremy Belisle’s net to give Carleton Place a 2 – 0 with Cullen and Dobson drawing the assists on Merkley’s power play goal. Loik Leveille brings the hosts within one at 14:24 of the first with Corbas Vincent Lovoie and Pierre – Anthony Martineau setting up Lavoie’s power play marker. Samuel Knoblauch increases Carleton Place’s lead with a contributor on Shawn Kennedy’s goal 1:46 into the middle stanza for the Canadians. Chad Pietroniro close the gap to one for Terrebonne at 4:29 of the second with Eric Leger and Kevin Laliberte adding the helpers for the Corbas.
Gabriel Paquin pulls Terrebonne within three 13:17 into the second with Benjamin Bohemier adding the assists. Leveille sinks the hosts fourth of the contest at 14:06 of the period with William Gignac registering the assists for the Corbas. Gignac pulls the Corbas within one at 4:19 of the final period with Hugo Talbot – Tassi adding the contributors on Gignac’s goal. Alex Friesen and Aiden Girduckis set up the Canadians seventh of the game 6:43 into the period on Theocharidis’ goal to give Carleton Place a two goal lead. Terrebonne’s Pietroniro fires a Cobra goal behind Canadian goaltender Connor Hughes at 7:56 with Triston Theriot and Kevin Laliberte notching the helpers.
Scoring his second of the period, Gignac evens the game at 7 – 7 for the hosts with 2:44 left in the game with Lovoie and Leveille registering the assists on the tying goal. Eric Leger had the lone goal in the shootout to give the Cobras a 8 – 7 win over the CCHL 2017 champions. Terrebonne netminder Jeremy Belisle stopped 33 of 40 shots while Connor Hughes made 37 saves in the Canadians second shootout loss of the 2017 Fred Page Cup.
Carleton Place will finish the round robin against the Maritime Hockey League’s Truro Bearcats on May 5th at 4:00 p.m while the Corbas play Collège Français de Longueuil in a 7:30 p.m match – up in Terrebonne.
