With a win at the 2017 Fred Page Cup over the Maritime Hockey League’s Truro Bearcats on May 5th in an afternoon matinee, the Central Canada Hockey League’s champions, the Carleton Place Canadians would advance to the semi – final against the winner of the Ligue de Hockey Junior AAA du Québec Corbas de Terrebone and the Collège Français de Longueuil of the Ligue de Hockey Junior AAA du Québec.
On a power play 6:49 into the first, William Cullen opened the scoring for Carleton Place with Tim Theocharidis and Brent Hill registering the helpers on Canadians goal to give the CCHL champions a 1 – 0 lead. Justin Cmunt fired a shorthanded goal of the Canadians at 7:31 of the second to give Carleton Place a 2 – 0 lead with Connor Merkley and Samuel Knoblauch adding the assists on Cmunt’s goal. Logan Buchanan finds the back of Bearcat netminder Jason Rioux’s net to add to the Canadians lead with Matthew Lombardozzi and Adam Donnelly setting up Carleton Places third of the contest 3:16 into the final period.
With 4:29 left in the game, Bearcat Riley Baggs pulls Truro within two with a power play behind Canadian goaltender Connor Hughes at 15:31 of the period. Denver Lynds and Cameron MacLeod drew the contributors on Baggs’ goal. Carleton Place goaltender Connor Hughes stopped 26 of 27 saves in the Canadians 3 – 1 win while Bearcat netminder Jason Rioux turned away 20 of 23 shots in Truro’s final game of the season.
“I was really pleased with our effort and game today. Our power play let us down today. I can live with that. I t was our best game of the week and we showed the grit and heart that made us MHL Champions. It is a fine line at tournaments like these. We gave Carleton Place our best effort. I wish them luck tomorrow. Very proud of my team and an honour to once again compete in the Fred Page Cup” said Bearcat coach Shawn Evans.
The Canadians will now face the Collège Français de Longueuil in a 3:00 p.m afternoon matinee in the 2017 Fred Page Cup semi – final. The winner of the semi – final will head to the championship against the hosts, the Corbas de Terrebonne on Sunday May 7th in a 3:00 p.m afternoon matinee.
