In the lone game of day five at the 2017 RBC Cup with the Dudley Hewitt Cup champions, the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s (0-2-1) Trenton Golden Hawks faced the British Columbia Hockey League representatives, the (0-1-0-1) Penticton Vees on May 17th in Cobourg, Ontario. The Golden Hawks are coming off a 8 – 0 loss to the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Brooks Bandits on May 16th while the Vees edged the hosts, the OJHL Cobourg Cougars on May 15th.
At 4:30 of the opening period, Penticton’s Ty Amonte sinks the first goal of the contest behind Golden Hawk netminder Chris Janzen to give Trenton a 1 – 0 lead with Sam Rossini and Owen Sillinger adding the helpers on Amonte’s goal. Nicholas Jones fires the Vees second goal of the game 14:03 into the middle stanza with a pass from Gabe Bast to bring Penticton’s lead to 2 – 0. With Penticton on a power play with 20 seconds left the period, Massimo Rizzo sends the Vees into the second intermission up 3 – 0. Taylor Ward and Jones drew the assists on Rizzo’s power play marker.
Jones registers his third point of the afternoon with another contributor this time on Penticton’s Grant Cruikshank’s goal to give the Vees a 4 – 0 win over the Golden Hawks at 11:20 of the final period. Trenton’s netminder Chris Janzen stopped 28 of 32 shots in the Golden Hawks’ loss while Penticton’s Mathew Robson earned the shutout making 21 saves in the Vees 4 – 0 win.
The Vees will now meet the LHJQ Terrebonne de Corbas in an afternoon matinee on May 18th in a 3:30 p.m puck drop while the AJHL Brooks Bandits play the hosts, the Cobourg Cougars at 7:30 p.m on the 18th.
