AJHL Saints Still Chance to Play in National Championships With Win Over BCHL Coquitlam in Dauphin

The Alberta Junior Hockey League Spruce Grove Saints hit the ice in Dauphin, Manitoba at the 2014 Western Canada Cup against the British Columbia Hockey League Coquitlam Express at 2:00 p.m at the Credit Union Place.

On a Coquitlam power play at 1:05 of the first period, Zach Hodder sinks the Express first goal of the game with an unassisted goal. Scoring their second goal for the Express at 4:10 of the first was Cody Boyd with a pass from Coquitlam’s Jace Hennig. At 5:24 of the second, Tristan Sieben found the back of Express’ goaltender Gordie Defiel to bring the game within one with assists from Austin Hunter and Geoffrey Crisfield. Tying the game on a Spruce Grove power play, Cameron Hughes sinks the Saints tying goal at 12:20 of the second frame with helpers from Parker Mackay and Corey Chomeyko. Notching the AJHL champions third goal of the game, Dylan Hollman of the Saints scored the go-ahead goal with contributors from Connor James and Jarid Hauptman.

Jake Mykitiuk increased Spruce Grove’s lead by two at the 6:14 mark of the third with being set up by teammate Cameron Hughes to bring the game to 4 – 2 for the Saints. Giving the AJHL representatives a 5 – 2 lead at 8:37 of the final frame, Carson Sarnoridny sinks his first goal of the championships with assists from Issac Farrah and Tyler Busch. With Coquitlam on a power play with 2:13 left in the game, Canon Pieper founds the back of the net of Saints netminder. Zach Hodder and Marc Biega assisted on Pieper final goal of the season for Coquitlam.
The Saints will sit and wait to see who wins the 2014 Western Canada Cup title on May 3rd at 8:00 p.m (EST) before they meet the loser to see who will be the second representative at the RBC Cup in Vernon, BC as the other Western representative.
