AJHL Bandits Roll Past OJHL Golden Hawks in RBC Cup Action

On Tuesday May 16th at the 2017 RBC Cup in afternoon matinee, the Western Canada Cup champions, the (2-0) Alberta Junior Hockey League’s hit the ice against the Dudley Hewitt Cup champions, the (0-1-1) Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Trenton Golden Hawks in round robin national championship action in Cobourg, Ontario.

At 4:04 of the first period, Bandit Conner Jean sinks the opening goal behind Golden Hawk netminder Chris Janzen for Brooks to give AJHL champions a 1 – 0 lead with forward Parker Foo adding the helper on Jean’s goal. Defenseman Cale Makar fires Brooks second of the game from blueline to bring the Bandits a 2 – 0 lead with Tyler Carangelo and Arnaud Vachon drawing the contributors on Makar’s goal 17 seconds into the middle stanza. Cale Makar registers his second point of the contest 12:46 on the period with an assist on Bandit Nathan Plessis’ goal to increase the lead to 3 – o. 32 seconds later, Brooks Nick Hamre scores the Bandits fourth of the game behind Benson at the 13:18 mark of the second with Jake Theis and Kord Pankewicz setting up Hamre’s goal.

With 2:03 remaining in the period with unassisted goal Bandit Nick Prkusic finds the back of Trenton Elliot Gerth’s net to add to lead to send Brooks into the second intermission up 5 – 0. Tyler Mappin slides the AJHL champions sixth of the game from the side of the Gold Hawks’ net 2:45 into the final period on a Bandit power play with Dennis Cesana notching the contributor. Parker Huebner finds Prkusic for his second of the game to bring the lead to 7 – 0 for Brooks at 4:48 of the third on a Bandit power play. Standing in front of Golden Hawk netminder Gerth, Theis tips the Bandits eighth into the back of the Trenton night 8:01 of the period to give Brooks a 8 – 0 shutout win.  Huebner and Charlie Marchand drew the contributor on Theis’ goal.

Golden Hawks netminders Chris Janzen and Elliot Gerth shared the duties between the pipes with Janzen turning away 23 0f 27 shots in the first 33 minutes while Gerth stopped 12 of 16 shots in the final 24 minutes in Trenton’s loss. Bandit goaltender Mitch Benson made 23 saves to earn the shutouot in Brooks 8 – 0 win in the sixth game of the 2017 RBC Cup in Cobourg. With the win, the Cougars sit at top of the RBC Cup standings heading into day five. Game stars of game six at the RBC Cup were Kord Pankewicz (Brooks Bandits) and Nick Boddy (Trenton Golden Hawks).

The Golden Hawks will be back in action on May 17th in an afternoon matinee against the British Columbia Hockey League’s Penticton Vees in a 3:30 p.m (EST) puck drop while the Bandits meet the hosts, the OJHL Cobourg Cougars in a 7:30 p.m start.
