AJHL Bandits Edge BCHL Vees in RBC Cup Overtime

After a 4 – 3 shutout loss at the 2017 Western Canada Cup on April 30th to the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Brooks Bandits, the British Columbia Hockey League’s Penticton Vees hit the ice against the Bandits on May 14th in an afternoon matinee at the 2017 national championships, the 2017 RBC Cup in Cobourg, Ontario.

With 2:10 remaining in the opening period, Penticton’s Ryley Rising finds the back of Brooks netminder Mitchel Benson’s net with an unassisted goal to give the Vees a 1 – 0 lead. On a power play and 33 seconds into the final period, Brooks defenseman Cale Makar finds Brooks Parker Foo to even the game 1 – 1 for the 2017 AJHL champions. Bandit Cale Makar fires a shot from the blueline, Ty Mappin tips the winning goal at 3:17 of overtime to give Brooks a 2 – 1 win. Penticton goaltender Mathew Robson stopped 31 of 33 shots while Brooks netminder Mitchel Benson turned away 20 of 21 shots in the Bandits 2 – 1 win. Game stars were Ty Mappin (Bandits) and Matt Robson (Vees).

The Vees will now face the hosts, the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Cobourg Cougars in the lone game on May 15th in a 7:30 p.m puck drop while the Bandits will meet the OJHL Trenton Golden Hawks on May 16th in a 3:30 p.m afternoon matinee start.
