AJHL Bandits Earn First Win Over LHJQ Corbas at RBC Cup

The 2017 Eastern Canada Ligue de Hockey Junior AAA du Québec Fred Page Cup champions, the Corbas de Terrebonne opened the national championships at the 2017 RBC Cup in Cobourg, Ontario on May 14th against the Western Canada British Columbia Hockey League’s Western Canada Cup champions, the Brooks Bandits on day one.

On a power play 35 seconds into the game, Bandit Arnaud Vachon sinks the opening goal of the 2017 RBC Cup with am unassisted goal behind Corbas netminder Jérémy Bélisle to give Brooks a 1 – 0 lead. finding the back of Terrebonne’s net with their second power play unassisted goal of the contest, Parker Foo brings the AJHL champions lead to 2 – 0 at 3:44 of the period. William Gignac scores the LHJQ champions first of the national championships 7:15 into the first with a pass from Vincent Lavoie. 24 seconds before the halfway mark of the period, Loïk Léveillé finds the back of Bandit goaltender Mitchel Benson’s net with the Corbas tying goal to pull Terrebonne even at 2 – 2 at the 9:36 mark of the first. Dennis Cesana sends a pass to Bandit Nick Prkusic to give Brooks a 3 – 2 lead 11:24 into the period. Finding the back of the net for second of the RBC Cup was Bandit Prkusic at 12:08 of the opening period with Ty Mappin and Oliver Chau notching the assists.

With 39 seconds left in the period, defenseman Cale Makar sends Brooks into the first intermission up 5 – 2 with Foo and Conner Jean adding the helpers. 44 seconds into the middle stanza, Josh McKechney increases the lead with jamming the puck under Bélisle pad to bring the lead to 6 – 2 with registering his second contributor of the game. Terrebonne’s Éric Leger sneaks the puck pass Bandit goaltender Benson to close the gap to three at 9:16 of the final period with Chad Pietroniro and Domenico Argento set up the Corbas’ third of the game. Corba netminder Jérémy Bélisle stopped 33 of 39 shots in the 6 – 3 loss while Bandit goaltender Mitchel Benson turned away 27 of 30 shots in Brooks win. Both Terrebonne and Brooks went one for six on power play in game one of the 2017 RBC Cup. Game stars: Pierre (Terrebonne) and Nick Prkusic (Bandits).

The LHJQ Corbas will now face the Ontario Junior Hockey League champions, the Trenton Golden Hawks at 7:30 p.m on May 14th while the Bandits meet the British Columbia Hockey League’s Penticton Vees in an afternoon matinee at 3:30 p.m on the 14th of May.
